Dreams to feature on NYJO’s 50th Anniversary double album

This week NYJO is at the iconic Air Studios recording its celebratory 50th anniversary double-album. This will feature a great combination of charts old and new, and includes my arrangement of the ballad titled Dreams.  The session includes special guest trombonist Mark Nightingale and composer/saxophonist Julian Seigel, and will be released in autumn 2015.

Metropole Arrangers Workshop 2014

I have just returned from an absolute fantastic week with the Metropole Orchestra! I was selected as one of seven arrangers from around the world to work with the Orchestra, guest vocalist Gregory Porter, and conductor Vince Mendoza, The week consisted of intensive masterclasses, workshops and recordings, and concluded with a sell-out concert featuring the Orchestra and Gregory at the TrivoliVrendenburg, Utrecht.

NYJO Commission premieres at Ronnie Scott’s

After being commissioned by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, funded by the Leche Trust, I had the pleasure of directing the premiere of my new work Loops at Ronnie Scott’s last week.

The piece was performed on both nights of their annual residency (21st/22nd Jan) and was met with high acclaim from the general audience, the NYJO committee, and even the Chair of Jazz Services Ltd.

Chris is selected for the Arrangers Workshop with Vince Mendoza, Gregory Porter and the Metropole Orchestra!

I’m delighted to announce that  I have been invited to attend the Arrangers Workshop in May with the Metropole Orchestra! As one of only eight candidates, I will have the unique opportunity to work closely together with the world’s leading Jazz and Pop Orchestra under the supervision of it’s honorary conductor, the renowned composer, arranger and conductor Vince Mendoza, and I will also have the opportunity to write and arrangement for the Grammy nominated guest vocalist, Gregory Porter.

The Chris Whiter Quintet launch night

After much work behind the scenes, I’m delighted to get my Quintet project up running!

Featuring Sam Miles on tenor/soprano saxophones, Chris Eldred on keys, Sandy Suchodolski on bass,  Joe Evans on kit and myself on flute and tenor saxophone, our first gig takes place at The Russet on Wednesday 18th September, 8pm-10:45pm.

More details and directions to the venue can be found on the Facebook event page. Hope to see you there!

NYJO at Ronnie Scott’s 01/02 Jan 2013

I made my  final appearances as a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra after nearly two years with the band, with a two night stint at Ronnie Scott’s. Both nights were a complete sell out, with the set including an eclectic mix as well two brand new commisions from trumpeter/composer Laura Jurd.

The set also featured three of my works – My original compositon The Change, a flugel feature ballad arrangement called Dreams (Chuganov), and a transcription/arrangement of a great Bob Brookmeyer track, Celebration Jig (taken from the Celebration Suite, originally written for Gerry Mulligan).

Chris makes the Jazzwise “Who to look out for in 2013” list!

The UK’s biggest selling jazz magazine, Jazzwise, has recently released it’s December edition. I’m  privileged to be listed in their annual “Who to look out for..” column for the coming year, with John Fordham, journalist for The Guardian saying –

“Flautist and saxophonist Chris Whiter’s impressionistic, multi-layered composition ‘The Change – title track of NYJO’s new album and a feature of its summer Prom – suggested that he is a hot prospect if jazz composing is where he focuses his many talents.”

Take Five!

In a monthly column, The Guardian’s John Fordham lists his pick of ‘musical milestones’ from the month just gone. Second on his list is a short article on Jazz at the Proms, with a real focus on the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and a special mention (and audio link) for the Change! Great to see the Prom performance receiving such great and well deserved press.

NYJO at the late night BBC Proms!

(10th August 2012)

Broadcast live on Radio3, I had the pleasure of performing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra at the BBC Prom!

A highly successful evening, with great reviews from a number of sources, including 4 star ratings from the Evening Standard and the Guardian, with John Fordham saying that, ‘flautist/saxist Chris Whiter’s The Change (a thoroughly contemporary layering of instrumental textures and rhythm patterns) sounded as if it could be in the repertoire for years’.  A short clip of the evening can be seen below, with the full show (aired on BBC4) currently available on iPlayer until Friday 24th.

Soloists featured in this clip of the opening number ‘Rockin In Rhythm’ are –

Clarinet – Myself

Bone – Callum Au

High notes – Louis Dowdeswell
